William Leslie LYALL
• Occupation: of 122 George St Edinburgh 1922; doctor; died age 74. BMJ 25 Feb 1950. Dr William Leslie Lyall, a former medical officer at Bunessan for the Ross of Mull area, died in Edinburgh on 21 Dec 1949. Born at Leven, Dr Lyall was educated at George Watson's College Edinburgh and graduated MB CM at Edinburgh University in 1896. He took the Edinburgh DPH in 1915 and was elected FRCP Ed in the same year. He was in practice for many years in the Morrayfield district of Edinburgh until, 15 years ago, he took the appointment in Bunessan. Dr Lyall was also medical officer of the Northern Lights Commissioners, and on several occasions directed by radio from Erraid the treatment of lighthouse keepers at Skerryvore and Dubln Heartach. He took a keen and active interest in the life and welfare of the islanders and he was a very popular figure in Mull. When he retired and went to live in Edinburgh in September last, he did so with regret, for he had come to love the people and the island. Dr Lyall served in France with the RAMC in the First World War with the rank of major. The sympathy of his many friends in Mull and the Oban district will be extended to his widow and his family in their bereavement. JAA William married (Esther) Marion MAIDMENT, daughter of Robert Swanton MAIDMENT and Eliza GOULD, in 1910 in Bromyard Dist WOR. ((Esther) Marion MAIDMENT was born in 1881 in Closworth SOM and died in 1956 in SCT.) |
