Circumstance: Charles Bendall had adored his mother but he and his father never agreed. The father was a dictatorial autocrat and ruled the family with a rod of compulsion. His wife had to go onto her knees to beg his pardon if she had offended him. The final quarrel which drove my father out of the business and the sombre, stern family home to London, with his young wife, was over the cruel treatment of his mother.
