Weston entered to fix labels to some packages, returned to the carriage, took the reins and proceeded to drive home. Uriah had entered the pony carriage at the dairy house, and seated himself beside the (loaded) guns - as they were hoping to shoot further on the journey home. Uriah turned round to ask Hole who was walking by the pony, to get address of parcels from the house, and accidentally touched the trigger, which fired shattering his arm. 'Oh what was that! I am shot in the arm. Never mind: look to the pony.' He died just before midnight from shock and loss of blood. 'My father was 64', said Weston at Saturday's inquest. On Monday last, Mr T Hutchins, jeweller, High Street ?Appeared to be in quite his usual health and was at the midday meal, chatting and laughing gaily with his wife and some relatives staying with them.. He left the dining room to attend to his business, and in a few minutes one of the cousins looking in to wish him goodbye, before going out for a walk, ?could not see a sign of him in his usual place. On passing round the counter he was found to be lying on the floor, unconscious and with blood ?oozing from his mouth and nostrils. An alarm was at once raised, and Dr Fry who was at home at the time was in attendance in a very few moments. Hutchins was removed to inner room, died about three hours later 6pm from coma following apoplexy. Defaulting rate collector- Serious Defalcations.
Painful sensation caused in City on Monday last [20th], it becoming generally known that William Newport Bendall collector of district rate was a considerable defaulter, a special meeting of Council was summoned to consider the matter. Last Fri & Sat Bendall collected from several citizens rates for Michaelmas Quarter- one of these receipts ?came to hands of Mr Crosse on Sat- he at once notified the authorities that the rate was being collected before being confirmed. Bendall had been using two receipt books dated Apr 1890, Michaelmas 1890. Bendall declared he had not got fictitious book in his possession (to E Foster), having doubtless destroyed it. Some evidence remained though in the regular official cheque book. Bendall was insured for £300 with Guarantee Society. They were informed - agent arrived on Tuesday as did a brother of the fugitive. No warrant has been issued. No further action till Fri. Last seen walking with overcoat on his arm towards Chilcompton Station. Nothing has since been heard of him. Estimated total £300-400. Collector to water company, deputy-registrar of Births, Deaths and Marriages, churchwarden of St Thomas. Defaulter as Treasurer of St Thomas Quoit Club. Toll collector at Cattle Market, and fairs with no checks made on the amounts collected. His cottages and house he lived in are sold or mortgaged [house] at full value so no means of recouping loss. Only asset is £300 from Guarantee Society. Wife and two children. Shock and surprise to everybody. Unbounded confidence was reposed in Bendall.
Wells Journal 30 Oct 1890
Snow fell on Sun am. A receiving order has been made on the estate of Mr William Newport Bendall, Westfield, Wells the absconding rate collector. CV Bennett has been appointed Manager and Collector of Wells Water Co Ltd.
The defaulting rate collector. Accounts have not been made up with deference to District Rate, amount of deficiency not yet been ascertained; no longer any hope that guarantee will balance the defalcations. Worse than suspected... In Liberty of St Andrew, Bendall appropriated a balance of £23 from last rate, collected £20-30 of last rate of which he has given no account. Fictitious rate book rate “rate made 1 Apr 1890 at 1s 2d in pound” collected a considerable sum, though no such rate was ever made (23 May- 1s in pound). Collector for Water Co- deficiency at least £50, possibly up to £70. Collector of rents for cottages belonging to Mrs Bale of Wellington- pocketed rents, paid no rates at all, similar situation on other cottages for which he was agent. Peculation in official connection with one or two local societies. Guarantee Society decline to face expense of prosecution, it is supposed Bendall has gone to America.
Letters:
suggestion Town Council knew for some time all was not right with Collr. Poignant misery into which his family has been plunged. On Sat night (18th) could have got a warrant, but was invited to meeting on Mon am instead; little short of imbecility would have expected he would attend.
Written by a sufferer who offers Mrs Bendall every sympathy.
Dissatisfied with council, and their tolerance of Bendall’s dishonesty (“give him a chance”), is it likely a starving creature would be allowed to escape after stealing calico or food- not likely!
Wells Journal 6 Nov 1890
Refreshing in these sceptical days to find such childlike trust: “You cannot conceive the difficulties I have in getting the rates from the residents in the Liberty”, rewarded in spite or because of these difficulties by Council for last nine years for his collection zeal [although for at least the last year the council were short on their anticipated returns]
Wells Journal 13 Nov 1890 Warrant issued on Monday was limited to England although it was commonly known he had left the country- Mr E A Crosse who discovered the whole affair, has not even received acknowledgement of his letter; the writer anticipates refusal of townsfolk to pay supplementary rates, and would welcome the prospect of the Mayor and councillors appearing in court trying to justify any such action.

Sad affair at Winterbourne. Suicide of a farmer. A painful sensation was caused in Winterbourne Gunner and the surrounding districts on Fri morning when it became known that Mr George Preece of “Hillside” in the village, had committed suicide by shooting himself. The deceased was formerly the agent on the estate of the late Sir Edmund Antrobus but since the death of the baronet has resided at Winterbourne Gunner. He left his house just before breakfast, with a gun. Nothing unusual, however was noticed in his appearance, or manner but as he did not return to breakfast Mrs Preece went in search of him. She was horrified to find her husband lying dead in the stable. Deceased had never threatened to take his life, and although he had at times been somewhat depressed, in consequence of having no occupation, no apprehension was felt on his behalf. The district coroner (RA Wilson) held an inquest on Friday evening. The widow was the first witness called. She stated that her husband who was 51 years of age, had followed no employment since he left Sir Edmund Antrobus. He had been living in that house since Sept 1899. He came down about ten minutes past eight and went straight out of the house into the yard. He had a letter that morning but it did not upset him. It was a bill amounting to between £15-20. Before he went out he said what he would have for his breakfast. He was a long time away and witness went out to call him. On looking into the stable she saw him lying on the floor. Deceased had no money troubles but he had not been so well since he had lived at Winterbourne. He had never threatened his life and witness knew of no reason why he should make away with himself. He suffered sometimes with his head. In answer to questions by the foreman (EF Gay) she said at Xmas time he was attended by Dr Luckham and at that time he [Preece?] said he thought it was his liver, and that if he had more to do he would be better.
Annie Brewer, domestic servant, said she had been living in the house one year and five months. She saw her master put on his boots, take the gun from a corner in the dining room and go out the back door. She thought he went straight to the stable. She did not hear the gun go off, but her mistress said she thought she heard something. Deceased was not in the habit of taking the gun out. She took a letter to Mr Preece before he got up. Supt Langstone stated that that morning he received a telegram from Mr Gay, and immediately drove over to Winterbourne. On his arrival the key of the stable was handed to him by a man named Brown. He found the deceased lying on his back in the first stall. Both hands were stretched out and the left leg was slightly drawn up. On the left side and within 18 inches of the body was a double-barrelled gun in the chamber of which were two empty cartridges. On the right was a lath which had evidently been used to move the triggers. The top of Mr Preece’s head was blown away, and the brains were scattered. Beneath the body was a very large quantity of blood. The deceased was fully dressed. In the pockets of the clothing, witness found a watch, a purse and keys. The foreman asked the Supt why the local policeman was away from the district when he was sent for. Supt Langstone said the constable was on duty at Bulford. The Coroner said there seemed to be no doubt that the deceased committed suicide. That being so they had to inquire into the state of mind he was in at the time and try to find a motive for the deed. Here there seemed to be no motive. Deceased however, was a peculiarly excitable man. Sometimes when under the influence of excitement he could hardly speak. Mrs Preece who was re-called bore out this ?contention, but asserted that there was no insanity in the family. He had been depressed lately at his inability to get work. The jury returned a verdict of “suicide whilst of unsound mind.”

Mr Thomas Hutton, Minsterley
Shropshire has lost one of the best-known estate agents by the death of MR Thomas Hutton of The Hall Minsterley which occurred after several weeks’ illness on Sat evening. Seventy-five years of age, Mr Hutton leaves a widow, four sons and two daughters. One son, Mr Robert Hutton lives in King Island, Tasmania, and another Mr Harry Hutton is in Edmonton, Canada.
A native of Somerset and son of the late Mr W R Hutton, who was agent for Lord Willoughby de Broke for many years, Mr Thomas Hutton was trained to follow his father’s profession. After being trained on the Warwickshire estates of Lord Willoughby de Broke, he took over the management of Lady Lyveden’s estates in Northamptonshire, and in 1883, at the age of 32, was appointed agent in charge of the estates of the Marquis of Bath in Shropshire and Herefordshire, a position which he held until about four years ago. Minsterley Hall, a fine old manor house was formerly a country residence of the Marquis, but on taking over the agency, Mr Hutton went to reside there. He was also agent for the Shropshire and Staffordshire estates of Mrs ?Addyes Scott, for the Rector of Pontesbury, for the Montgomeryshire estates of Mrs Redman and controlled the Down estate Bridgnorth, the Hinton estate of Mr Tatham Warter, Mr S Atherton’s Hampton Loade estate and the Norbury estates in Shropshire.
He was a recognised expert land valuer and forty years ago inaugurated a small holdings scheme which was carried out with great success under his management. He was fact the originator of the scheme and lived to see it taken up by local authorities. He was also an authority on mineral ores.
Mr Hutton found time to take an active part in public life, and was a -- of the Minsterley Parish Church for many years. He was a keen supporter of Minsterley Horticultural Society, of which he was a former chairman, a member of the School ?agency and a commissioner of the River Rea Drainage Board. Always ready to assist in the organisation of any worthy cause, he was prominently connected with the building of the Parish Hall and the erection of the Minsterley War Memorial. He was a great sportsman, and in his earlier years was a crack shot.

The funeral took place Holy Trinity Church Minsterley on Tuesday by Rector of Hope. Private mourners were Mrs Hutton widow, Wilfred Hutton son, T V Hutton son, Mr and Mrs Beck (son-in-law and daughter), Mr Harry Hutton of Leamington brother, Sidney Hutton of Great Ness House nephew, Dr Murphy of Pontesbury, Nurse Pearson.
