July 2001.

Email from Tricia Haine:

Hi David, At last I have found how to contact you again. The family book you sent my Mum is so wonderful, I would like to again thank you for all the work that went into it, it is such a treasure. A week ago I took my Mother to New Plymouth to visit the elderly Aunts, my father’s (Bob Haine) sisters. Lass and Madge are now 89 and 86, both still living in their homes but with help. We had a gathering of as many family members as were able to come and we showed them your book. They were all overwhelmed and thrilled to see all the details. The tree and book references were pored over for hours and a lot of remembering was done. There have been some great old photos come to light as well. Over time I will try to peace together all the things that are being remembered so that we have some sort of a story to the lives of the Evan generations.

August 2001.

Acquired volume of the diaries of Josiah Jackson, having spent an unproductive afternoon in Bruton in April/May trying to track down the 'author' (and a copy of the book). He has a long grey beard, you'll find him on a bicycle...

Sep 2001.

Kingsley Padfield. I was most interested in Autograph book and old photos you have recently received, if there is any chance of you scanning any relevant photos for me I would gladly cover your expenses. Those quotes from my mother were priceless and very typical, both she and my father had a keen sense of humour.

Sept 2001.

Met Norah Massey (86) and Geoff Green (81) in Dorset and on the Dorset-Somerset border, September 2001. Geoff was my closest farming relative. He died two months later. Norah Massey passed me a set of photographs and the 1823 grammar book of Joseph Haine (1811). Geoff passed me a box of photographs and the autograph book of Gussie Creed.

2003.

Find out about the message from beyond the grave of Nellie Shearman, also that her stepfather was first married to a daughter of Richard Haworth, the Salford mill owner.

Oct 2003.

Find that a life of Randall Swingler (B40) was launched in Clerkenwell Green this month.

November 2003.

I found Augustus Lewis living in 1920 with his niece Ida, by now married to G W Taylor a life insurance agent and living at 6352 Washington Boulevard, St Louis. I noted that Ida’s age had been under-represented and that the Taylors had a German chauffeur who lived with the family. I got lucky with the Washington University website, it appears the Catholic Student Center is now based at 6352 Washington Blvd, and the website gave a full biography of Ida Taylor, mentioning that her brother was founder of TUMS.

2004.

Mar 2004.

I read about Mr Tory in a photocopy of the book of Pimperne. Mr Tory said that he would put every son into a 1000-acre farm and that every daughter would marry a 1000-acre farmer. One of his daughters married William Taylor, grandson of Sarah Parsons later Haine. Mr Tory’s ambition was achieved.

Mar 2004.

Letter from Phil Ramsay, Walnut California following my letter to his cousin Merideth in Dorset. It emerged that Jonas Maby junior died 1894 at Weston under Penyard, Herefordshire and that Patience died with her sons in Cheltenham in 1923 age 86. Patience was of a very competent and business-like stock, also a determined and prolific woman, though petite in build.

Apr 2004.

The emergence of the Maby tree, first mentioned in Margaret Haine’s letter (1950), a poor copy seen in Phil Ramsay’s correspondence and now known to be with the Doel family at Lacock, Wiltshire.

May 2004.

Letter from Avril Powell, Norwich. You are to be congratulated on a most impressive result (re the Haine book).

Information on Padfield Family Journal, Nance’s letters and hint of Edney.

A newspaper cutting filed with the Padfield Journal had been transcribed: “Pilton - Wesleyan Foreign Missionary Meeting held in newly renovated Wesleyan chapel. Mr and Mrs Haine provided tea. Mr Haine as the brother-in-law of a West Indian Missionary fittingly occupied the chair.” This admission was completely new. I discussed the conundrum with my cousins, over from the States, as we sat with my co-researcher Hanna, in London. We had to conclude that the most likely candidate for the hitherto unknown ‘West Indian Missionary’ was James Edney, husband of Elizabeth Haine. Elizabeth being the older sister of William and Susannah and the only one of the dozen Haine children whose fate remained unknown.

Dec 2004.

I double-checked the will of Sarah Haine formerly Parsons and was intrigued by the mention of her daughter Ann Taylor nee Parsons as of course there was a woman of this name (wife of Thomas Taylor) based in Pimperne. It turns out this is the same one. The connection with the Taylors got more and more complicated. William Haine's stepdaughter Ann Parsons married Thomas Taylor, his half-brother Jonas Maby married Thomas’s sister Patience Taylor and his niece Annie Look Haine married Job Corry son of the Taylors' aunt Patience Taylor. In addition Annie and the younger Patience were the nieces of Sarah Look, William Haine's first wife, who was also his cousin. Plus there is the connection with the Cole children who grew up in Australia: the boy married William Haine’s daughter Jane while the girl married his stepson, George Parsons.
